Who is Jayson Tatum?

Tatum is a current NBA player for the Boston Celtics. He was selected third overall in the 2017 NBA draft, which is itself an interesting story. That same draft, the Boston Celtics held the number one overall pick but traded with the Philadephia 76ers, earning themselves a ton of value by picking up the third overall pick (selecting Tatum) and a future first-round pick (which ended up becoming #14, where they selected Romeo Langford). Luckily the 76ers were set on Markelle Fultz, and the Lakers selected Lonzo Ball, which meant the Celtics still got the guy they wanted all along. 

Since then, Tatum has become the best player from the 2017 draft class. He's a dominant two-way player with a chance of earning himself a First Team All-NBA and First Team All-Defense in the 2023 season. his past accolades include being a 4x NBA All-Star, 2023 NBA All-Star Game MVP, All-NBA First Team (2022), All-NBA Third Team (2020), NBA All-Rookie First Team (2018), and multiple college and high school accolades.

Tatum became a father at the young age of nineteen, and his son Jayson Christopher Tatum Jr., better known as “Deuce,” has become quite the fan favorite for the Celtic faithful. Jayson Tatums most expensive basketball card is the 2017-18 Panini National Treasures Patch Autographs card from his rookie season with the Boston Celtics. The card is signed by Jayson Tatum and is one of only two certified MT 10s. There are ninety-nine other cards made, but again, only two have been able to achieve the pristine mint rating making them far more valuable compared to the others. 

There is no doubt in my mind that the price of this card will continue to climb. Tatum has still yet to reach the age of 25 and has already led the Celtics to the NBA Finals as the team's star player. That same postseason run, he became the first player in NBA history to receive the brand new Larry Bird Eastern Conference Finals MVP Trophy, which is fitting given the history of Bird on the Celtics. Unlike Bird, who has much more expensive cards compared to the current Celtics star, Tatum still has plenty of room to grow. And hey, maybe one day he'll go down in history above Larry Bird in the all-time player rankings.

At only 24 years old, and perhaps not even hitting his athletic prime yet, Tatum is in his fifth NBA season. Tatum is averaging over 27 Points along with roughly 8 Rebounds per game. If you are looking to position yourself in Tatum's market, we suggest firing up a bid here early on. Offered is Tatum's National Treasures Gold RPA encased in a BGS 9 holder. This card features something a bit more significant than the jersey patch, as the specific part it shows showcases the number of championships the Celtics have won. Seventeen in total. This card would be expected to rise significantly in value if Tatum can break that number himself by hoisting a Championship to the rafters for the legendary NBA franchise.

In 2017-18, when the Celtics finished second in the Eastern Conference, Tatum set a franchise rookie record with 105 triples (43.4 percent from behind the arc). THe forward became the fifth rookie in NBA history and first since Stephen Curry (2009-10) to eclipse 1,000 points and shoot at least 40 percent from 3-point distance.

Anytime your shooting can be compared to Stephen Curry, I think you're doing pretty well for yourself!

I know I mentioned we would be skipping many of the duplicate Rookie Patchs that make up a large part of these new players' most expensive cards list, but this one was too funny not to add. Imagine how lucky you'd feel if you pulled this card out slowly from the pack, saw Tatum's name, and found out the jersey patch you received was completely white and showed no lettering. What a bummer. I mean, at least it's still worth a pretty hefty sum of $45,600, but still!

Tatum went to Chaminade College Preparatory School in Missouri during his basketball upbringing. As a freshman, he averaged 13 points and 6 rebounds per game and earned himself one of his first accolades, the 2013 Metro Catholic Conference Co-Player of the Year award. The next year he took a massive leap, doubling both his points and rebounds and averaging 26 points and 11 rebounds per game.

Two great young players in the game with very similar games. Both of these guards are lethal from long-range and very adept at getting to the rim and finishing or drawing contact and knocking down free throws. While Tatum is a rangier defender, Donovan is no slouch on that end and has re-invented himself after a recent move to the Cleveland Cavaliers franchise. Boston fans hope no such trade comes between them and their superstar Jayson Tatum. Donovan Mitchell and Tatum shared First Team All-Rookie honors after their 2017-18 debut years, and it's cool to see them share a card representing their second year in the league.

That's an incredibly recent sale that shows the staying value behind Tatum cards and the incredibly likely possibility that Tatum continues to improve over his career. This Optic Black variant features no jersey patch or signature, but it does come in at a pristine mint 9 rating, so the value is easily recognizable.

 

Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown currently make up the wing position for the Boston Celtics. Surprisingly, they were both selected third overall in back-to-back drafts by the Boston Celtics. Considering they're both most comfortable at the wing position, they showcase their ability to be versatile players by dominating side by side on the court together. With both being so young, if they stick together throughout the rest of their career, I'm certain success will follow!

2018 Panini Kaboom! Gold Jayson Tatum ROOKIE /10 #K-JT BGS 9 MINT

The Panini Kaboom! The Series offers a throwback 1960-70s comic book feel. It looks straight out of the iconic Batman of yesteryear. And to be fair, that simple word really shed light on some of the explosive plays Tatum has made so far in his short career. Just take a look at the dunk over Lebron in the playoffs he had below!

Wow! Now if that image were encapsulated on a card, that would be nuts! I'm not sure if basketball card companies are looking at creating poster cards, but if they are, credit me for the idea!
