Keep reading to learn more about the legendary quarterback Tom Brady, how he's become universally recognized as a superstar, and which cards are the most expensive Tom Brady football cards ever sold.
Who is Tom Brady?
Tom Brady is one of the greatest quarterbacks ever to play football. He spent the first 20 seasons of his career creating a dynasty with the New England Patriots alongside Bill Bellichek. The Patriots reigned over the league from 2001-2019, with Tom and the team winning six Superbowl rings, making the Super Bowl nine times, winning 17 Division Titles, and 13 AFC Championship Games.
After playing college football at Michigan, the Patriots selected Brady 199th overall in the 2000 NFL draft. Many felt he wouldn't be a great player, evidenced by his late selection, but would prove everyone wrong. Tom would earn a chance to prove himself after Patriots quarterback Eric Bledsoe went down with an injury. The rest is history. He would lead the team to a Super Bowl win that same season.
Tom Brady holds nearly every major quarterback record, including most career passing yards, completions, touchdown passes, and games started. Alongside his incredible counting stats, Brady is also the NFL leader in career quarterback wins, regular season wins, quarterback playoff wins, and Super Bowl Most Valuable Player (MVP) Awards, as well as being the only Super Bowl MVP for two different franchises.
But enough about Brady. Let's get to the cards.
2000 Playoff Contenders Tom Brady Championship Ticket Autograph /100 #144 BGS 9/Auto 10
$3,800,000.00
You read that right. The most expensive Tom Brady football card ever sold netted 3.8 million dollars in a private sale on February 22nd, 2022.
Unsurprisingly, this nearly tops the list of the most expensive football cards ever sold, but you'd be surprised which cards hold the top spot!
This card has a storied history filled with high prices. It sold for $3.1 million on June 4th, 2021, in a Lelands auction. $2.4 million on October 22nd, 2022. You get the idea. This card has seen many ownership changes over time, all for a significant amount of money.
Let's look at the Leland Auction website's description to understand what makes this card special.
The undisputed “Best of the Best,” TB12 just captured his 7th Super Bowl title on the strength of his 5th SB MVP award, and the 199th selection in the 2000 NFL draft's accomplishments have sealed his position as the (G)reatest (O)f (A)ll (T)ime. Just like Tom's seven Super Bowl victories, there are only seven of these BGS MINT 9 examples in the entire world, with NONE GRADED HIGHER! For a card that was produced in 2000 with a print run of 100, you would think at least one would receive a grade of 9.5 or 10, however Brady's Contenders autographs are notorious for being incredibly condition sensitive and nearly impossible to grade at a high level. (91) total submissions have been graded by Beckett and PSA, and even though a few of those could have been people resubmitting, the number being so close to the print run of 100 leads us to believe there may never be another BGS 9 example. Sub-grades are: Centering 9.5; Edges 9, Corners 8.5; and Surface 9. Signature is graded perfect 10/10. Numbered #8/100, which could very well stand for Brady's Super Bowl title count if he is victorious next season. Soon after Brady won the Super Bowl in February of 2021, a few owners of the other BGS 9 versions were asked if they would accept $5 million for theirs, and each one declined. Even as more of these cards trickle into the market, in lower grade, the incoming flow of BGS 9's has been non-existent and may end with this specimen. Truly a historic offering.
Interesting to note the offers made to purchase the other BGS 9 versions in circulation for $5 million and to have the offers refused. If any of those offers are accepted, this could quickly fall down the ranks of the most expensive Tom Brady football cards. You have to wonder if they're waiting for Brady to retire and hoping that would boost the price higher!
2000 Playoff Contenders Tom Brady ROOKIE RC PSA/DNA 10 AUTO #144 PSA 10 GEM MINT
$2,880,000.00
A similar card to our most expensive Tom Brady card, but lacking the gold tint. This isn't the Championship Rookie Ticket that raised the price significantly on the card above. However, adding this card to your collection will still cost you millions.
Of the Rookie Ticket 2000 Playoff Contender Cards, you won't find a better quality one than this. It also features a GM MT 10 rating alongside an AUTO 10 rank. Coincidently this football is also numbered #144.
Here's the PWCC Websites description of this incredible card.
No other player in football has obtained greatness like Tom Brady; a figure who possesses the draw of invincibility that only comes with championships. Like Jordan, Gretzky, Woods, Ruth and Venus; Tom Brady holds the status of immortal and is one of our culture's most active legends, still showing attributes of youth and viability which seem to redefine what's possible within the landscape of professional sports. As the modern card market matures the allure of these mainstream issues are leading investment minded growth, with seemingly no end in sight. The 2000 Panini Contenders Autograph Tom Brady rookie resides as the single finest blue-chip for his brand and represents the single most important football card produced from the modern era. Professionally assessed by PSA as an earth-shattering dual 10 example, actively representing one of the single best copies in the market. The offered card easily stands apart from the others, possessing ‘brand new' qualities throughout. The fragile gold foil ticket truly excites as it possesses no visual scuffs, scratches, or imperfections. All four corners are uniformly untouched with the fragile periphery being entirely clean; rare as this card is typically plagued by edge chipping. Furthermore, one of the most difficult aspects of this card, the autograph is a perfect PSA/DNA 10 example which is penned in black sharpie.
A higher grade won't allow this card to hold down the top dog status. But it would be incredible to own a card featuring the legendary QB at a BGS rating of 10!

You'll notice a steep drop off in price here. I wanted to include several Tom Brady cards that differed from the ones featured above. If I were to continue listing the most expensive, it would be the same cards from the 2000 Contender Series again and again. And no one wants that.
