The Most Expensive Gary Payton Basketball Cards

Gary Payton is one of the most destructive guards in league history. Nicknamed “The Glove” for the way he locked up opposing guards. He's the only point guard in league history to win the DPOY and is also tied with Jordan, Kobe, and Garnett for most 1st Team All-Defense selections.

Gary Payton has stayed relevant in the NBA media landscape, appearing on talk shows and on TV for different channels. Despite this, his basketball cards haven't reached the astronomical level of some of his other peers.

This list was made from the information provided by Cardladder.com. Each card is only listed once.

1997 Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems PMG Red Gary Payton /100 PSA 6 – $9,500.00

The most expensive Gary Payton basketball card that has ever sold was a 1997 Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems Collection. Another of these precious red metals to set the price for a specific player is the same type of card as one of Michael Jordan's most expensive sports cards.

At a price of only $9,500, I might even be able to afford this one! That's right; I could own one of the most expensive sports cards in the world—at least that's what I'd boast about to my friends if I ever pick up one of these cards.

Another of these Precious Metal Gary Payton cards also sold for $9400, which we think should also be mentioned. With only 100 of these cards produced, if you have a high-quality one lying around, it could be worth some serious cash.

Another basketball card in the beautiful precious metal collections that peak on many of our lists, but with only 50 total made compared to the 100 of the Red Precious Metal Gem cards we saw above.

This card features a side-view of the superstar Gary Payton and a black and white face-shot of the Seattle guard.

2013-14 Immaculate Gary Payton NBA LOGOMAN Patch AUTO 1/1 Supersonics – $6,855.00

Another type of card that graces the top of many of our lists is the NBA logo man patch. This is a unique 1/1 that displays a patch of Gary Payton's game-worn jersey. Unfortunately, we couldn't find the exact card that was sold, but it would look similar to the one above. It probably had the NBA patch, as most cards of this cost usually have, but we'll never know!

2003-04 SP Authentic “SP Triple Signatures” #PBJ-A Kobe Bryant/Magic Johnson/Gary Payton Multi Signed Card (#04/15) – PSA GEM MT 10 – $6,765.00

One of my favorite trends with these lesser-known stars of the NBA is the players they are grouped with for NBA basketball cards. Payton began hopping teams later in his career while chasing a championship, finally winning one with the Miami Heat, and he played one season with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2003-04.

Now the hilarity of this guard is the assumption that Gary Payton deserves to be on a guard of Lakers legends Kobe Bryant and Magic Johnson, two of the top-10 players in the history of the NBA, but hey, at least the card is signed by the two of them! In my opinion, this lightly counts as a Payton card, considering most of the value would come from Kobe and Magics' signatures.

2003 Gary Payton Exquisite Collection Limited Logos /75 BGS 9.5 – $5,500.00

This is a beautiful card. Nice crisp and clean, especially with the contrast of the Laker's Gold and Purple. Again, with Payton, it's ironic that many of his most expensive basketball cards are as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers, but that's the power of the Lakers brand.

The high quality of this card, being a 9.5, combined with a beautiful jersey patch makes this a truly high-value card.

2016 Immaculate Collection Gary Payton Ray Allen Shawn Kemp AUTO /25 #26 BGS 8.5 – $5,200.00

Now, this is what I'm talking about! Finally, we have a combination of Seattle Stars, where Gary Payton truly made his mark on the NBA. On the Seattle Sonics of old, Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp formed a truly dynamic duo that even made the finals one year, eventually losing to Michael Jordan and his Chicago Bulls.

Of course, another Seattle player, Ray Allen, also appears on this card. Ray Allen and Gary Payton only played one season together on the Sonics, in the 2002-03 season. At this point, Shawn Kemp didn't play on the team any longer, so the trio pictured in this card never took the floor together in their time in the NBA.

2003 SP Signature Edition Kobe Bryant Gary Payton Kevin Garnett AUTO /25 BGS 9.5 – $4,153.00

Lets throw another three players up on here! Another card that features Lakers star Kobe Bryant paired up with Payton during his 2003-04 stint with the team, SP also decided to throw on some OG Timberwolves Kevin Garnett to lighten the mood.

A 9.5 overall quality with three authentic signatures make this a truly cool and valuable basketball card

2003-04 Upper Deck “Exquisite Collection” Foursomes #BPMO Kobe Bryant/Shaquille O'Neal/Karl Malone/Gary Payton Quad Patch Card (#04/10) – BGS NM-MT+ 8.5 – $3,383.00

A rarified quad patch! I'm guessing this card would be worth significantly more if the Detroit Pistons hadn't severely destroyed the Lakers in the NBA finals, but at least we've got four signatures from historic NBA greats.

All jokes aside, with only 10 total cards made, four authentic autographs, and the Laker's branding behind the card, I'm confused as to why this card is worth so little. Maybe it's one to look into.
