The LEGO brand has been around for nearly a century. Throughout the company's existence, it has released a variety of themed sets that people of all ages enjoy playing with. Many of these sets are inspired by famous movies or eras, making them perfect for collecting. The most expensive Lego sets ever sold may seem like they are outrageously priced for plastic blocks but they are actually much more affordable than many other items in the collectible genre.
While LEGO releases hundreds of sets every year, some sets are only given limited-edition releases and are therefore hard to find. As LEGO collecting became more popular, the demand for these rare sets increased. The increased demand has created a series of very expensive LEGO sets. Here are the Top 12 Most Expensive Lego Sets ever sold:

Only 53 Piper Airplanes were ever created. All 53 sets were given out at the LEGO Inside Tour in 2012. While most sell for about $4,000, one eBay listing has the set valued at $10,000! Check out the listing here!
This Piper Airplane set is listed for so much because it is still in the original box (unopened even) and is signed by the designer, Mel Caddick! Sealed and signed LEGO sets are worth exponentially more than opened sets.
