The 9 Most Expensive Lebron James Basketball Cards

Lebron James has been a superstar since he stepped into the league. At the end of his career, he will go down as a top player, and a historical figure in the history of the NBA. Because of these reasons, his basketball cards have climbed incredibly high in value. So what are the most expensive Lebron James of all time? We've detailed them out below!

Who is Lebron James?

Lebron James is one of the greatest basketball players ever stepping on a court. Hailing from Ohio, he is generally considered at least the second-best player in NBA history, behind Michael Jordan. Nicknamed “The King,” James has won multiple NBA finals, MVPs, Finals MVPs, Olympic Medals, and more.

On top of this, he is likely to go down as one of the highest-scoring players in NBA history, with a good chance to pass Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the highest-scoring player of all time. Another rare statistical accolade Lebron holds is being the first player to reach over 10,000 in total points, rebounds, and assists in his career. He is also a member of the only team to come back down 3-1 in NBA finals when he led the Cleveland Cavaliers to a championship over the Golden State Warriors in the 2016 NBA finals.

Destined to be a star from a young age while playing at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, Lebron has been a model NBA star for his entire career. He is an advocate, has opened his own high school in Ohio, and has never been involved in off-court drama that would harm the league. Alongside his NBA career, Lebron is also a philanthropist, social activist, and one of the most charitable athletes ever.

Why are Lebron James Basketball Cards so Expensive?

With the recent explosion in the price of basketball cards, Lebron James has seen his cards become some of the most expensive ever sold. Why is this? It's because Lebron is a globally renowned NBA star with a chance to become the most famous basketball player in history. Will he ever pass Michael Jordan in the GOAT (greatest of all time) discussion? Maybe, or maybe not. But regardless, as one of the top players of all time, his cards will carry a significant value with them.

The most expensive Lebron James basketball card ever sold was this 2003-04 Upper Deck Exquisite Gold Rookie Parallel Card for $5.2 million. It was the highest-selling basketball card ever until it was later surpassed when a Steph Curry Basketball Card sold for $5.9 million. How much do you want to bet Joe Lacob bought that card?

Although not the rarest of cards, with 23 total in existence, it is rated at a 9 MINT and will be extremely high quality. It features a rookie Lebron James, a rookie patch from a jersey, and his signature at the bottom of the card.

2. 2003-04 “Exquisite Collection” Exquisite Rookie Patch Autograph #78 LeBron James Signed Patch Rookie Card (#23/99)

$2,460,000.00

2003-04 UD "Exquisite Collection" Exquisite Rookie Patch Autograph (RPA) #78 LeBron James Signed Patch Rookie Card (#23/99) – LeBron's Jersey Number! – BGS NM-MT+ 8.5/BGS 10

Sadly, this is only an 8.5 MINT. The owner must've been kicking himself! It always gets me when a simple .5 of a rating might be the difference between $2.1 and $5.2 million. But honestly, I'd take either amount right now without a second thought.

This is a card we've already seen on this list, and while it is significant for its price, it's not the most expensive, so it likely won't be remembered the same.

5. 2003-04 UD “Exquisite Collection” Rookie Patch Autograph (RPA) #78 LeBron James Signed Patch Rookie Card (#57/99)

$2,029,500.00

2003-04 UD "Exquisite Collection" Rookie Patch Autograph (RPA) #78 LeBron James Signed Patch Rookie Card (#57/99) – BGS MINT 9/BGS 10

Another exquisite rookie patch with nothing to write home about. As part of the 99 other cards in this selection, its special, but as for this list, its anything but. Featuring the same silver Upper Deck logo, I would think it has a better swatch of jersey that might've fetched a higher price, but it isn't the case.

This basketball card looks eerily similar to the #1 card on our list, but it isn't the same. The gem 9.5 MINT value is higher, but this card's price was much, much lower. Did the jersey swatch being less visible drive the price down that much? Regardless, it's still in the millions of dollars, so I'm sure no one is going home crying.

6. 2006-07 Upper Deck Exquisite Collection All NBA Access Triple Logoman Michael Jordan/LeBron James/Kobe Bryant Game-Used Logoman Patch Card (#1/1)

$1,680,000.00

What happens when you put three game legends together and then feature three jersey patches with the NBA logo on the card? Well, you have it sell for $1.68 million, which is low considering the staggering talent on the card.

You have the undisputed GOAT, the 2nd best player in the NBA (and I don't mean Kobe), and the closest player to Jordan to ever play in the NBA. What a trio and the three beautiful logos really make it stand out even more.

Authors Note: At this point, three more Upper Deck Exquisite Rookie Class Cards appeared on this list, selling for $1.68, $1.52, and $1.392. I decided to omit them to feature different-looking cards.

7. 2003 Topps Chrome Gold Refractor /50 LeBron James PSA 10 Gem Mint

$1,200,000.00

2003 Topps Chrome Gold Refractor /50 LeBron James PSA 10 Gem Mint

We've got our first appearance from TOPPS. All the cards above have been part of Upper Deck collections, but finally, this shot of Lebron James taking a jumper made it onto the list. And I believe that's future teammate Ben Wallace he's shooting over.

A pretty unremarkable card, in my opinion, but it is a rookie, and that will have some tremendous value. The #1 draft pick emboldened on the bottom is pretty strange, but I guess it wasn't a problem for the guy paying $1.2 million.

Authors Note Again: Hey, me again. The next 10 cards were all seen before, so I've decided to show the coolest cards remaining that are different. Here they are.

8. 2004 Topps Chrome Lebron James (Superfractor) #23 PSA Gem Mint 10

$720,000.00

2004 Topps Chrome Lebron James (Superfractor) #23 PSA Gem Mint 10

2004 Topps Chrome, pristine 10 MINT rating, and a Lebron photo featuring a reverse dunk on the break? Count me in. A card different from the abundance of similar cards on this list, the gold lettering and lack of a signature to drive up the price makes it an interesting option. It's also surprisingly a 1 of 1. And with no autograph or jersey patch, that might not be the case, but what do I know?!

9. 2003-04 Upper Deck Ultimate Collection #127 LeBron James Signed Rookie Card (#036/250)

$660,000.00

2003-04 Upper Deck Ultimate Collection #127 LeBron James Signed Rookie Card (#036/250) – BGS PRISTINE 10/BGS 10 - Black Label, POP 3

Oh baby, a 10! No wonder a basketball card featuring 2003-04 Rookie Bron could otherwise make this list without a patch. My only questions about this card. Was rookie Bron really this bald? Was he wearing the headband this season, or was it just a rare occurrence that he didn't have it on? I guess I'll never find out.

Final Thoughts

As with many other lists of the most expensive basketball cards, you can see that the top cards are usually all from the same set. There isn't much variety, except in the jersey patches. One weird thing about Lebron is the lack of the NBA patch finding its way onto this list, and furthermore, many of the actual jersey swatches aren't that interesting to look at. If you look at Ja Morant's most expensive basketball cards, you'll see many of his jersey patches feature actual letters, which I think is cool.
