Johnny Manziel’s Career

Johnny Manziel career timeline

Early Career

This Parade All-American player’s career started with him being a receiver as a Freshman in high school. He was later moved to Quarterback in the fourth game or season of his sophomore year. He began to garner attention from college coaches with his impressive stats.

In his senior year, he threw for 3,609 yards and 45 touchdowns. Manziel racked up awards in his final high school season.

One of his awards was the National High School Coaches Association Senior Athlete of the Year award. He was also named as The San Antonio Express-News Offensive Player of the Year twice.

Johnny received scholarship offers from Louisiana Tech, Colorado State, Baylor, Iowa State, Oregon Rice, Stanford, and Texas A&M before ultimately deciding on Texas A&M.

College Career

Quarterback Ryan Tannehill departed for the NFL after the 2011 season leaving the QB job at Texas A&M open for Manziel. Of all the schools that wanted to get their hands on Johnny, Johnny settled for Texas A&M on an academic scholarship. The varsity team wanted to test his performance and set him up with Jameill Showers and Matt Joeckel. He surpassed them in performance before becoming the starting quarterback in his first year.

He caught the attention of everyone, including clubs, when he broke Archie Manning’s 43-year-old record for total offense in a game against Arkansas.

After leading Texas A&M to victory in a game against top-ranked Alabama, his name started to appear on Heisman Watchlists. Then, he broke records by becoming the first freshman quarterback in NCAA history to achieve 3000 passing yards and 1000 rushing yards in a season.

As a freshman, he received the Davey O’Brien Award and Heisman Trophy. In his sophomore season, he managed to take the 5th position in the 2013 Heisman Trophy voting.

Professional Career

Johnny decided to leave collegiate football and enter the 2014 NFL draft, foregoing his final two years at Texas A&M. Manziel drew comparisons to Drew Brees and also drew criticism for his small stature.

On the draft day, Johnny Manziel was skipped over by 21 teams, including the Browns, likely as a result of the allegations and controversies surrounding his name at the time. He sent a text to Browns quarterback coach Dowell Loggains, who helped convince the head coach Mike Pettine to draft him as the 22nd overall pick.

Brian Hoyer, not Manziel, would start at quarterback for the opening regular-season game. In his rookie season, Manziel received a $12,000 fine from the NFL for a profane hand gesture/signal he made in a preseason loss to the Washington Redskins.

Then in the following 2015 season, Johnny was demoted to third-string quarterback after videos of him partying widely surfaced online. However, that same season, he led the Browns past the San Francisco 49ers for their first win in months. On March 11, 2016, the Browns finally cut ties with Manziel paying out the remaining $7,707,913 left on his contract. In his short time with Cleveland, he threw seven touchdowns and seven interceptions.

After Cleveland Browns cut Manziel, he spent two years away from football.

He returned to football in 2018 after signing a two-year contract with The Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the Canadian Football League. However, he was with them for only six weeks as a benchwarmer before being traded to the Montreal Alouettes in July 2018. It didn’t take too long before the Canadian Football League (CFL) cut their ties with him and the Alouettes had to release him from his contract on the orders league officials.

Johnny tried returning to professional football the following year by joining the Alliance of American Football (AAF) in March 2019. However, the league did not complete a single season before filing for bankruptcy.

Johnny Manziel resumed a second season with the FCF Zappers as a player-coach in 2022. In 2020, Johnny joined the Fan-Controlled Football Zappers, of which his friend, Bob Menery, is a co-owner.

Johnny Manziel’s Controversies

Although a talented athlete, Johnny’s career has been marked by several off-the-field controversies and run-ins with the law; in 2012, even before his first college football game, he was involved in an altercation with the law.  Following a scuffle that required police intervention, Manziel presented a fake ID to the police and ran into further issues. However, he was still named the starting quarterback for Texas A&M.

Johnny Manziel wasn’t always on his best behavior away from the field and always had one issue or the other that drew the media’s attention. Some of the incidents he got involved in were: getting thrown out of a University of Texas fraternity party, accepting payment for signing autographs (which he was found not guilty of), and being pulled over by the police for fighting with his girlfriend, Colleen Crowley.

He was also investigated by the Dallas Police Department on claims of domestic violence by Colleen. He later got indicted on misdemeanor assault.

His conflicts off the field resulted in Cleveland Browns cutting him off. It also resulted in the loss of his Nike endorsement agreement and the termination of his client status with more than one agency.

Johnny Manziel’s Awards and Achievements

In spite of all the controversy, Manziel was a phenomenal college football player.  He was once referred to as the next Michael Vick and a young Brett Favre.  While at Texas A&M, Johnny Manziel won numerous awards and the hearts of college football fans. In 2012, he became the first Freshman to win the Heisman Trophy and the Davey O’Brien Award. He was also the first rookie to win the Manning Award.
